Project Segmentation

When engaged in systems design and / or implementation projects, Computer Solutions segments such projects into four levels.  These levels are used to help both the client and Computer Solutions manage the project as efficiently as possible by defining the boundaries of each level and then tackling each level accordingly.

The service delivery capabilities of Computer Solutions vary at each level according to the client’s requirements.  If / when needed, Computer Solutions engages with its sister company (Exigy Ltd.) to ensure that the client is provided with a complete solution.

 Project Segmentation Levels Description
 
Level 1: Foundation Structures

Level 1 encompasses various basic components that provide support for the fundamental IT services.  These include network cabling, hubs, switches, routers, bridges, VOIP solutions, network protocols, server and client computer hardware, licensing consultancy, CCTV systems and other active and / or passive equipment.

 
Level 2: Operating Systems
This level covers server and client operating systems.  Operating systems are typically based on the Microsoft or on the IBM platform according to the client’s requirements.  More specialised operating systems such as Cisco IOS are also included.
 
Level 3: Infrastructure Solutions
Level 3 is made up of various solutions that provide the underlying support for the core business functionality.  Examples of such solutions include directory services, messaging and collaboration solutions, security products, databases, systems management solutions, anti-virus systems, backup systems and others.  This level also covers office automation products on client computers and other supporting client applications.
 
Level 4: Line of Business Applications
The topmost level covers systems that normally rely on solutions provided at lower levels.  Line of Business applications are generally complete ERP applications, POS systems, CRM solutions and other systems that the organisation uses to run its business operations.

Using the Project Segmentation Model

It is normal practice that during a project, various levels are considered.  Besides, a certain amount of level overlap is also typical since a lot of solutions are based on multiple levels with no clearly defined boundaries.

Analysis normally begins from the lowest level that needs consideration and proceeds to higher levels as needed.  Each level is analysed using a standard phased approach that starts with analysis, moves to design, on to implementation and to maintenance which is generally an on-going process that guarantees continuous improvement.

This structured approach is based on a proven methodology that can help streamline projects of virtually any size.  It provides the ideal ‘hooks’ that are needed to manage a project’s progress along its whole lifecycle and helps the client better visualise the status of the project’s deliverables.
